I spent last week with a group of guys who love baseball and love Jesus.  Seven of us went to Brooklyn, New York and led a four-day baseball clinic for kids ages 8-17.  They were broken down into clinics for 8-11 and 12-17 yrs old.  Never have I seen a group of 75 kids so receptive and eager to learn…about baseball.  Charlie Mitchell, former big-leaguer, had a dream to help kids learn the proper techniques and basic fundamentals about baseball, while at the same time, sharing with them about Jesus.

In 1998, he took a team to Turner Field (home of the Atlanta Braves) to have Braves players tape a Baseball Training DVD and the Christian life.  The title for the DVD was Fielder’s Choice.  Since that day he has worked with city leagues, various teams and individuals to share this message and DVD.

A surprise for the week in NY was Cali Magallanes, Chaplin for the New York Mets.  He worked with us each day to lead a MLB style baseball Chapel service.  Five students became Christ followers in one of the Chapel services.

A few teams and individuals from Smyrna and Lavergne ,TN also donated equipment to be given away at the clinic.  It looked like Christmas when the eight boxes of equipment arrived.

The Field Commissioner was reluctant about the clinic at the beginning of the week.  I think he was concerned no one would show up or the fields might get messed up.  By the end of the week he was asking us to come back next year and was gave a free lunch and snacks to all participants.  I think he was pleased.  At the end of the week each of the clinic leaders gave away their Fielder’s Choice hats, shirts and equipment to the kids.  We were even asked for autographs.

What a great God we serve who allows us to use our passion to share His love.
